A bloggy question

I don't know if you all knew that I use pseudonyms for my kids on this blog or not but the fact is, I do. Ive mentioned their names on other blogs and comment sections so Im not too strict about it, but it just seemed weird to be telling the world all of these personal details about them and actually sharing who they really are. The problem is that it is really freaking hard to remember to use them. Last week after working on a post, I even called Josiah by that name. His real name is nothing like that, I mean they share one letter. I often have to correct a name before I publish a post because Ive forgotten to use it. The names that I use on here are their middle names which were only chosen in the first place to compliment their real names. Using them by themselves just doesn't work, for me anyway.

So my question to you is how do you handle this dilemma? I know some of you use initials or middle names or even cutesy nicknames. If you do that, what made you decide to use whatever names you chose? Or even better, do you use your real name in your blog or is that a pseudonym as well? Personally, I use my real name. Ive always loved my name and don't want to hide it. I also love my kids' names (well except Michael's, but that's another story) and Id like to share them here but I wonder about it still. Anyway, comment away peoples and let me know your opinions...um, please. ;)

  1. Ditto for the names I use (you know that..lol) It's so weird to read my blog after it's done and see those two names for Boyfriend and Daughter. Of course you are the reason I thought to do so, lol and another thing is that I kind of do it for DB and his privacy. I always find when I read your posts that I am trying really hard to remember which is which .. lol (because I know the actual names and it's hard to remember the middle ones) Looking forward to see what everyone says about this :)

  2. I use everyone's middle name, and it was an impulsive decision: I started my first blog post and went, "Oh, uh...do I want to use their real names?" And I answered myself, "No." So then I had to decide what to call them, and I first tried coming up with similar names but that got too challenging so I just did middle names "for now." Which turned into "for all time." I think it works, though, because if I'd chosen similar names, I would have had an even bigger problem when I forget what the real name is: at least now if I call my baby "Henry" by accident, I'm calling him part of his own name.

  3. Astarte isn't my real name, or anything connected to me - it's the name of the goddess of fertility. Patrick is The Boy's middle name, but Josie is for the name The Girl was almost named - Josephine, for the character in Little Women. Well, that's what I wanted to name her, but DH voted it down.

  4. Whimsy is quite obviously NOT my name, but it's something I've used for a few different things (in my email, for example), for a long time - so it fit. I haven't been terribly secretive about my real name (Amy Lynn) and I've had a few IRL people comment on my blog and call me by my name.

As for everyone else? Chip is actually Chip's name - it's a nickname, but he's used it since he was a baby. He would never answer to his given name. And Alice is her real name. I called her Bean before she was born and that has stuck, but I use it interchangeably. I guess I figure that I'm keeping certain details private (like our last name, where we live exactly, etc.) and unless you're living in my house or have a public blog, I use initials or pseudonyms out of respect.

Wow. That was a long answer.

  5. I go with the nicknames for the kids and first real first names for adults. When I first started blogging I used husband, niece, step-son, etc.

I guess it all comes down to your personal comfort level. I can definitly see if you alter the names a little where the confussion can come in, but if it works, stick to it! Good luck!

  6. I decided when I started my blog to have a pseudonym for myself. Then I couldn't bring myself not to use my son's real name. So I DO use my son and husbands real names. For now this works for me. It would be too hard to keep track of other names for me, I think.
